Ask a Music Manager: Mandy Beats
What is branding?
Oh the elusive concept of “branding”. Sadly, a lot of artists think of branding as having an artist name and logo, but it is SO. MUCH. MORE. Branding is your story. It’s your artist universe that you are inviting fans and listeners into. So if you only have a name and logo- the universe is pretty dull. But when you have a story- and can engage people around it- you build connections to your universe. And when people feel connected to something, they want to be in it. And when they are in your universe- they become your super fans. And as an artist, you want superfans- so you can have a sustainable and profitable career in the music industry.
But that’s just the “why” branding is important. Next thing to think about is “how” to be good at branding. And it’s not a one size fits all, not a follow these steps and this exact template to learn to do it. If it were that easy, everyone would be good at it. At the end of the day, it’s being an engaging storyteller and feeling comfortable enough in yourself (and your music) to openly share it with the world and receive its feedback.
Good branding is an artform. But luckily, like all art forms- you can get better at it.
